Giving Voice UTM
Project Overview
Welcome to our project page! Here, you can find information about the research methods we will use, our participants, a project timeline, and the funding we have received for the study.
Our Methods

We believe it is important to use mixed methods, which allows us to use a variety of data collection approaches.
For example, we will:
-
Administer questionnaires in an online survey to ask about racialized undergraduates' background, personality, well-being, and their experiences at UTM
-
Use an app on a smartphone to get a snapshot of people's thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in everyday life.
-
Use interviews to hear from participants in their own words, in order to...
-
obtain narratives to get a sense of people's journeys through the university years.
-
allow people to share other aspects of their lives.
-
-
Use a community-based participatory research approach (CBPR), because it enables collaboration between researchers and participants during the research process. We have a strong desire to create meaningful connections with our participants!

Our Participants
In the summer and fall of 2024, we recruited a large cohort of first-year undergraduates who identify as racialized.

Eligible participants should be between 18 to 29-years-old, and (intend to) be enrolled in their first year at UTM for the 2024 to 2025 academic year.
We teamed up with transitional programs (e.g., EagleConnect) and student organizations (e.g., UTMSU) to recruit students who are interested in participating in our study!
Participants will be asked to complete surveys on their computer and smartphone every few months and may be invited to take part in interviews and other study activities throughout their time at UTM. Compensation will be in the form of a gift card and will depend on the activities completed at each assessment.

Are you interested in participating in our study? Please reach out to the Chung Lab at chunglab@utoronto.ca for more information.

Our Timeline
Data collection for Giving Voice is planned to take place across four years, consisting of several assessment waves.
During the first year, up to four waves will be administered to incoming first-year students. The first wave will take place in the summer prior to the first year of university. In the following years, participants will be invited to participate in the study in the months of September, December, and April.

Our Study Funding

We are grateful to have received generous funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council to conduct Giving Voice from 2024 until 2028. We hope to secure additional funding over the coming years!
